Once it’s cooled. Kneed dough together into a ball.

Add food coloring. Use as little or as much as you’d like.

It’s a good idea to wear gloves or mix it in a bag so you don’t get any food coloring on you.

Once it’s mixed, the color will not transfer onto your hands.

Then have FUN!! Store the playdough in small containers or baggies.

Daddy got in on the playdough fun too!

This is an extremely easy and fun activity for kids. Some children may be able to help kneed or even stir!

*I used the playdough recipe from Skip to my Lou who got the recipe from Homemade by Jill.

  2. OMG that is so awesome! I am totally going to do this for my nephew and when we have kids. It’s much cheaper then the store brand!

  3. I love making homemade play dough. I think I enjoy it as much (more?) than the kids do!!

  4. I made it once before and it just didn’t turn out right, but we didn’t have cream of tartar either.
and I can get 5 play doh packs at the store for like $1.60 or something so it’s pretty cheap here.
But great tutorial and I love the colors.

  5. My 7 year old loves doing this with the neon green coloring.

  6. Great tutorial and pictures! I’ve been hesitant to make any at home because I was worried it wouldn’t turn out right, but I think I’ll give yours a try – it looks perfect. 🙂

  7. Why not add the food colour before mixing it on the stove? Thats how I’ve always done it, and it eliminates the need for gloves or kneading…

RE: heather m’s comment- it’s not really about the cost, it’s just more fun to make your own dough!

    • I’ll try that! Thanks for your comment!

  8. cool idea, I look forward to trying it.

  9. Oh how fun! What a neat idea to do with the kids! I love how you can make your own colors…and would be so fun to mix then up too! Would be good teaching mixing colors too!

  10. My mom used to make me playdough when I was a kid! She would put vanilla extract or some other extract in it to make it smell pretty.

  11. What a great reminder, those pictures make me think back to when I was little and how much better fresh playdough is!!

  12. I love playdough! Loved it as a child and still love it today — would love to make this with my young cousins for a fam get together. Haha they’d probably smash this stuff in each other’s hair but hey– that’s youth for ya!

  13. This looks like such fun! Thanks for linking up at Pin It Tuesday! ~ Pary Moppins

  14. Oh my gosh, this looks like a blast! My kids always leave the playdough out and it gets hard, so this is a great way to give them something to make and then play with too!

  15. Luv it
